Plants love terracotta. As an earthenware clay, terracotta is fired to a lower temperature. This leaves it more porous, allowing air and water to pass through. This way, terracotta helps the soil breathe and keeps moisture levels balanced - and happy soil means happy plants.

Most flower shops sell mini succulents and cacti that fit these face planters, but you can easily grow your own. Just take a leaf from your favourite succa and leave it on top of some potting soil. Spider plant babies make for great cuttings too. And if your experiments fail, Google ‘propagation’ for some tips and tricks.

To create the mould for these terracotta face planters, I built on an old German doll face mould found at a flea market. I recognised their faces instantly: they brought me back to my German grandparents' house where I used to play with my mum's childhood dolls.
