BROKEN | MENDING

Broken I : Fragile
Porcelain, reclaimed scaffolding
Cracked wood held together by a hand-cut porcelain tile.

Mending I : Boro
Textile, mixed media
Part of the Japanese practice of wabi sabi (the acceptance of imperfections and transcience), boro is an ancient method of continually mending textiles using a simple running stitch.

Broken II : Imperfections
Porcelain, stoneware, earthenware
This set celebrates grog, crackle and iron flecks breaking the glazed surface - some of which are historically perceived as flaws in ceramics.

Mending II : Kintsugi
Porcelain, imitation gold leaf,
Expressing the belief that something is more beautiful for having been broken, kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending ceramics with gold.
