ABOUT MOTTAINAI MADE
There is this box in my studio. It’s got ‘MOTTAINAI’ scribbled on it and it’s full of remnants of experiments, surplus bits and bobs, little offcuts and testers. A few times a year I turn the box over on my worktable and have a play to see what I can make with them.
Mottainai is a Japanese concept for the sense of regret we feel over waste: the idea that something has not been used fully, or to its full potential – or has not been treated with respect and gratitude.

Based in London, Studio Janneke creates small collections of feel-good ceramics, with a focus on handmade items, one-offs and limited runs.
